In his first days in office the new Garda Commissioner said that he envisaged a garda service that is ‘responsive’, ‘accountable’, ‘transparent’ and ‘open to concerns raised externally’. If that is his vision he would be making a good start by answering 3 simple questions posed to the Garda Authorities some 15 months ago following the revelation by Stephen Kershaw in a radio interview of a very questionable relationship between himself and the investigating garda.
- Is Stephen Kershaw’s version of events correct?
- If so, what was its duration, nature and extent?
- If this relationship existed was it disclosed to the DPP?
To continue to ignore these questions the Commissioner’s words are just empty platitudes and the current culture will persist. And the new broom will just sweep the scandals further under the carpet!
